COLUMBUS, OH. (THECOUNT) — Makiyah Bryant has been identified as the teenage girl fatally shot by Columbus police Tuesday afternoon.

Police released bodycam footage Tuesday night showing the officer fatally shooting the girl, who appeared to in the process of stabbing two females with a knife.

A black-handled blade resembling a kitchen knife or steak knife appeared to be lying on the sidewalk next to her immediately after she was shot.

Officers had responded to the 3100 block of Legion Lane in Columbus, on reports of an attempted stabbing. Police shot Bryant at about 4:45 p.m., police said. The 911 caller reported a female was trying to stab them before the line disconnected.

Bryant was transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead of gunshot injuries.

It’s unclear whether anyone else was injured.

State law allows police to use deadly force to protect themselves or others, and investigators will determine whether this shooting was such an instance, Interim Police Chief Michael Woods said at the news conference.
