HORRY COUNTY, SC. (THECOUNT) — Gordon William Best, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, has been identified as the North Myrtle Beach police officer killed in a New Year’s morning vehicle crash in Horry County.

Best, 30, was killed in a single-vehicle crash near North Myrtle Beach early Friday morning.

According to reports, Best was on-duty in his cruiser responding to a call near Barefoot Resort on Highway 17, when for unknown reasons, possibly weather related, the vehicle crossed centerlines and exited the roadway around 4 a.m. Friday. The vehicle then made contact with a utility pole.

Best, North Myrtle Beach Public Safety Sgt, was pronounced dead at the scene of blunt force trauma injuries.

Best joined the department in 2013, and was promoted to sergeant on Feb. 17, 2019.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
