MONTGOMERY COUNTY, VA. (THECOUNT) — Mercedes Diane Scales, of Christiansburg, Virginia, has been identified as the victim in a fatal Sunday morning crash in Montgomery County.
Scales, 24, who resided in Falls Church, Virginia, was killed in a single-vehicle Sunday crash near Christiansburg.
According to reports, Scales was traveling as a passenger in a Nissan Rogue in the 1500 block of Ellett Road, when for unknown reasons, the vehicle crossed centerlines and exited the roadway around 6 a.m. Sunday. The vehicle then made contact with a substantial tree.
The operator of the Rogue, 24-year-old Preston Conner Jones, was transported to an area hospital with serious unknown injuries.

Scales was pronounced dead at the scene of blunt force trauma injuries.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
