ANDROSCOGGIN COUNTY, ME. (THECOUNT) — Gary Labonte of Lewiston, Maine, has been identified as the victim in a freak car ignition accident Saturday night in Androscoggin County.
Labonte, 57, was killed after a vehicle he was working on became engulfed in flames on Saturday outside his home on Saturday.
According to officials, Labonte was draining the gas tank of his vehicle at his residence in an effort to replace a fuel pump when a suspected electrical spark ignited the gasoline.
Labonte was in the area of four gas cans he was using to store fuel when the explosion occurred.
Labonte, who resided at, 8 Cottage Street in Lewiston, was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead of thermal injuries.
The cause of the death remains under investigation.
