‘Green Mile’ Retired NYPD St. John’s Basketball Star Arthur Green Dead Of COVID-19

NEW YORK, NY. (THECOUNT) — Retired NYPD transit officer known as “The Green Mile” because of his burly frame and similarities to actor John Coffey, has died from coronavirus complications, relatives said Wednesday.

Arthur L. Green, 49, former small forward on the St. John’s University basketball team, died at a Bronx hospital Monday, his wife Tiffany Whitlock.

The 49-year-old cop suffered from poor health including acute asthma, making coronavirus a deadly threat to him.

“He was pretty much loved by everybody. He would do anything for just about everybody,” Whitlock said of her husband. “I’m still waiting to pick up his belongings, but I can’t go nowhere near the hospital.”

“He was always eager to learn, very smart. A people person, everybody knows him in the street,” said NYPD Det. Tracey Travis, who worked with Green in Transit District 12 and helped the rookie cop process his first arrest, for fare evasion.

Green also played for the NYPD basketball team, friends said. He left the department last year after serving more than a decade as an officer with the department.

“Arthur Green was missed when he made the decision to retire early from the NYPD and certainly will be missed by friends and family and those who knew him,” said former NYPD Assistant Commissioner Robert Gonzalez, who worked as a lieutenant in the Transit Bureau when Green joined the force.
