NEW YORK, NY. (THECOUNT) — According to sources, an inmate at Rikers Island, in New York, has contracted the coronavirus.
Daily News is reporting that the first person in city custody to test positive for COVID-19.
The news came just hours after union officials announced that a correction officer also has the infection. The correction officer — a member of the Security Operations Division — worked at the entrance gate at Rikers, union officials said.
Advocates have called for drastically reducing the jail population in the city to curb the spread of coronavirus.
