NASHVILLE, TN. (THECOUNT) — An overnight tornado has struck downtown Nashville killing at least five people and causing widespread damage overnight.

The tornado ripped through downtown Nashville taking the same path of the twister that devastated East Nashville in 1998.

Some of the hardest-hit areas in the storm include Centennial Boulevard and Briley Parkway in West Nashville, where there were reports of heavy damage to planes at John C. Tune Airport. Several hangars have been destroyed and power lines are down. The public is advised to say away from John C. Tune until further notice, reports MyFox8.

Overturned tractor-trailers littered the interstates on Interstate 24 near Antioch and Interstate 40 near Mt. Juliet.

Metro Nashville Public Schools are closed Tuesday.

The extent of the damais still being assessed as of Tuesday morning.
