GROSSE POINTE, MI. (THECOUNT) — A pair of Grosse Pointe, Michigan brothers who were at home from school over a Richard Elementary School “delayed start” time, have been identified as the two juveniles tragically killed in a Monday morning house fire, according to reports.
The two children — fourth- and fifth-grade boys — were home alone when they were killed Monday in a Grosse Pointe house fire during the morning hours, according to authorities.
The morning blaze occurred at a home near Fisher Road between Kercheval and Mack avenues, reports clickondetroit.
The home is located near the Blue Devils South football field and the Grosse Pointe Public Library.
Neighbors said they could “hear screams” when the fire began at the home and they “heard the boys yelling for help,” but were unable to help, according to authorities.
When firefighters went in, the boys were incapacitated from “hiding from the smoke,” officials said.
The children were home because the elementary school had a delayed start time Monday, police said.
School officials sent out a letter telling parents they have the option to pick up their children early from school to explain the student deaths.
No one else was injured in the blaze.
The victims were not identified because of their age.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the origin of the double-fatal fire.
