MANDEVILLE, LA. (THECOUNT) — Captain Vincent “Vinny” Liberto Jr. was coming up on his 26th year with the Mandeville Police Department when he was shot and killed during a high-speed chase Friday afternoon, reports WWLTV.

Liberto the first Mandeville police officer killed in the line of duty in 61 years. According to law enforcement officials, he and another officer pursued a vehicle that refused to pull over around 2 p.m. Friday. The chase ended in a 3-vehicle crash, in which the suspects then got up and shot at the officers before fleeing.

Two Mandeville police officers were shot Friday near U.S. 190 and LA22, and one has died, according officials.

The officers were shot after a vehicle chase that ended near the Beau Chene Country Club while an Oak Course golf tournament was taking place on Friday.

According to Gov. John Bel Edwards, State Police at 3 p.m. arrested two suspects in the fatal shooting.

One witness at the scene said the shooting happened across the street from the Cafe Du Monde location on North Causeway Boulevard, according to NOLA.

Missy Noel, who was on the nearby Beau Chene Golf Course for a golf tournament Friday, said the teams of golfers were ordered off the course and told to shelter in the golf clubhouse. The golfers were on the Oak Course, she said. She said police were patrolling the area.

There is a heavy police presence in the area.

Avoid the area until further notice.

According to their website, Beau ChĂȘne Golf hosts golf tournaments up to 300 players due to its 36 hole facility. While many of Beau ChĂȘne’s tournaments benefit a variety of charities and organizations, many tournaments are for player development like the APT Professional Golf Tour, Louisiana Golf Association Tournaments, Arrowhead Golf Tournaments, Louisiana High School Tournaments and Team Practices.
