TX Man Lee ‘Pete’ Hopkins ID’d As Suspect Killed In Fiery High-Speed Pursuit That Ended On Nacogdoches Golf Course

NACOGDOCHES, TX. (THECOUNT) — Houston, Texas man Lee Hopkins, has been identified as the man killed during a high-speed pursuit near Wharton Thursday night, according to reports.

According to the Lufkin Police Department, Wharton bank robbery suspect, 43-year-old “Pete” Hopkins, was killed when his vehicle veered off the road.

Hopkins’ vehicle then made contact with a utility pole causing it to go airborne and into a large tree before eventually coming to a stop on the 12th hole of the Nacogdoches golf course.

The car’s engine block was on fire as it separated and tumbled away from the vehicle.

Hopkins apparently died on impact and was pronounced dead at the scene by a Nacogdoches County Justice of the Peace, reports KTRE.

An undisclosed amount of cash was recovered from the vehicle, along with a loaded pistol and additional magazines. Mitchell was not with Hopkins at the time of the crash and remains at large.

Around 11:30 a.m. yesterday, Hopkins and another man identified as 42-year-old Tony Mitchell of Houston, robbed First State Bank of Louise at gunpoint. They fled the bank at 505 E. Boling Highway in Wharton with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of Mitchell is asked to contact police at 911. You may stay anonymous.

Friends and family members took to Facebook in disbelief and to remember Hopkins:
