MARGATE, FL. (THECOUNT) — Imani Malik, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has been identified as the mother left in critical condition and her 5-year-old son dead after her vehicle crashed into a tree in Margate Monday night.
Imani, 25, was operating a vehicle when the violent collision occurred on Monday night shortly before 11 p.m. on Royal Palm Boulevard.
Margate police Lt. Efrain Suarez said Imani Malik was driving a 2017 Nissan Sentra east on Royal Palm Boulevard, when for unknown reasons, she lost control of the vehicle, crossed centerlines and exited the roadway. The vehicle then struck a large tree.
Suarez said Malik’s 5-year-old son was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene, according to Local10.
Malik was transported to an area hospital where she was listed in critical condition.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but a man who didn’t want to be identified said a witness told him a police officer tried to pull the car over for speeding before the crash.
