GOTHENBURG, NE. (THECOUNT) — Jill McCandless has been identified as the victim in a Sunday murder-suicide in Gothenburg, Nebraska.
McCandless, 53, was found shot dead inside a residence along with a male victim, later identified as her husband, Jeff McCandless.
Authorities in Gothenburg say two bodies were found dead inside a home on Sunday after a relative performed a welfare check on the couple.
The Dawson County Attorney’s office said in a statement that the cause of death appeared to be a murder-suicide. Investigators speculated that Jill’s husband Jeff shot and killed the veteran police officer and then turned the gun on himself.
Jill McCandless was a law enforcement officer serving the town of Gothenburg for roughly 1o years after joining the force in 2010, reports LawEnforcementToday.
