BRISTOL, VA. (THECOUNT) — Abingdon High School student star athlete, Kirk Nairn, has been identified as the teen killed in a crash on Interstate 81 Thursday night.

Nairn, 18, failed to brake in time for slowing I-81 traffic ahead around 10:10 p.m. Thursday and rear-ended a tractor-trailer in Washington County.

No one else was injured in the crash.

Nairn, who was set to graduate tonight, was pronounced dead at the scene of multiple blunt force trauma injuries.

Nairn played soccer and basketball for the Falcons and was also a golfer on Abingdon’s state champion golf team. He was going to go to the University of Kentucky on an ROTC scholarship, reports Fox17.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Graduation will go on as planned at Abingdon High School Friday night.
