AUBURN, AL. (THECOUNT) — Star Auburn University gymnast, Samantha Cerio, suffered a gruesome injury – breaking both legs – during her floor routine while competing at the Baton Rouge Regional Friday.
Cerio, a senior, had to be carted out of the regional gymnastics event Friday while attempting a handspring double front with a blind landing.
The gymnast reportedly “reached for the ground too early,” hitting the mat hard.
Video footage shows Cerio screaming in agony and clutching both her legs after the accident, reports MyFox8.
Auburn was able to advance despite Cerio’s injury, but was eliminated Saturday in the Regional Final.
Cerio is an aerospace engineering major expecting to graduate in May. After graduation she will work for Boeing in Seattle.
