ROCK HILL, SC. (THECOUNT) — Haney Howell, a well known former Winthrop University professor who worked as a reporter for WRHI and at CBS as war correspondent during the Vietnam War, died Monday.
Howell, 75, worked at WRHI as a newsman during his long career.
He joined Winthrop in 1988, serving in the mass communication department for nearly 30 years before retiring in 2012, according to heraldonline.
Howell started Winthrop’s student-run campus television news show Winthrop Closeup and was instrumental in creating the broadcast journalism program Winthrop has today.
Howell also worked in New Delhi, India, and held news roles in Texas, Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia, according to a release from Winthrop. He also participated in the Poynter Institute Seminar on Broadcast Journalism in St. Petersburg, Fla.
According to their website, WRHI is one of the nation’s pioneers in Radio broadcasting, leading the way with local innovative promotions, unique community based programming and cutting-edge technology. In the 1990s, WRHI became one of the earliest to stream Radio on the internet and in 2007 revolutionized AM radio as the first station in America to broadcast on an FM translator.
