SC Man Arrested After Fakes Own Sumter Kidnapping To Get Mother To Pay $130 Ransom

SUMTER, SC. (THECOUNT) — Emmanuel Franklin, of Sumter, South Carolina, has been arrested after police say he faked his own kidnapping in order to get $130 from his mother.

Franklin, 19, is accused of blackmailing his own mother after he led her to believe he would be killed by kidnappers if she didn’t pay a $130 ransom, according to Sumter County deputies.

The suspect was arrested on January 24 and charged with blackmail after falsely claiming he had been kidnapped, calling his mother and instructing her to place $130 in a specific Bagnal Drive mailbox.

Deputies say on January 22, Franklin caused his mother to believe he would be killed by kidnappers if she did not put $130 money into a mailbox on Bagnal Drive.

Franklin reportedly later admitted to officers that he made up the story to get $130 from his mother, reports WLTX.

“Blackmail” in South Carolina is defined as the intent to extort money or any other thing of value from any person, or attempts or threatens to do any of such acts, with the intent to extort money or any other thing of value. Upon conviction, Franklin could be fined not more than five thousand dollars or imprisoned for not more than ten years, or both, in the discretion of the court.
