CHICAGO, IL. (THECOUNT) — Nick Theofanopoulos has been identified as the Cook County sheriff’s deputy killed in a head-on crash in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois Monday night.
Theofanopoulos, 39, was driving to work on South Kedzie Avenue Monday night when he was involved in a fatal head-on crash on Chicago’s Far South Side.
A 21-year-old woman driving the other vehicle was treated at an area hospital with unknown injuries. She was not cited in the crash.
According to reports, Theofanopoulos was driving to Christ Medical Center to relieve a fellow deputy when the fatal crash occurred. He would later be pronounced dead at the same hospital.
He was transported to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died, according to ABC7Chicago.
About 9 p.m., the 39-year-old deputy was driving north in the 10300 block of South Kedzie Avenue when he struck a Jeep that had backed out of a driveway and began turning southbound, Chicago police said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and fellow deputies at this exceptionally difficult time,” a police spokesperson said.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office has not released detail about his death.
