COLLEGE PARK, MD. (THECOUNT) — Olivia Paregol has been identified as the University of Maryland student who died from an adenovirus-related illness.
Local reports say, Paregol, 18, a UMD freshman, was in her first semester of college.
Adenovirus has been in the news in recent weeks after at least 11 children died from the disease at a rehab facility in New Jersey.
The University of Maryland issued a letter acknowledging the death, though never naming anyone officially. The letter acknowledged in part that on November 19, the university learned that “the testing of one specimen sent to the CDC revealed Adenovirus 7, a strain that may cause more severe illness.” source
The University of Maryland‘s Health Center said it learned of the student’s illness on November 1.
Since then, there have been reports of five additional cases of students with an adenovirus-associated illness.
Adenoviruses are common causes of colds, but there are strains that can cause more serious illnesses.
