OSCODA TWP, MI. (THECOUNT) — David Smith, from Orlando, Florida, has been identified as the victim in an Oscoda Township, MI, small plane crash Tuesday morning.
Smith, 33, went down in a plane he was piloting in Iosco County. Authorities say, Although wreckage was located, no bodies have yet been recovered.
Officials said, Smith was on record as operating a Kalitta charter from Ypsilanti to the crash scene airspace.
At 10:30 a.m. Oscoda Township Police found the wreckage on federal forest land about 4-5 miles away from Oscoda–Wurtsmith Airport, located at, Oscoda-Wurtsmith, E Airport Dr, Oscoda Township, MI.
Officials believe only one person was on-board, and have identified him as David Smith, 33, from Orlando, Florida. Authorities said his family has been notified. source
Officials said that runway lights were activated at the airport, which would have been activated by a switch in the cockpit, however, no plane approached.
The FAA is expected to take over the investigation and are on their way to the scene.
