BEDFORD COUNTY, VA. (THECOUNT) — Alberto Zaldivar Columbie, of Daleville, VA, has been identified as the victim killed after being struck by a train while parked on the tracks in Big Island.
Columbie, 39, was attempting to move a semi-truck off the tracks in Bedford County on Friday when an oncoming train struck him and the vehicle.
A tractor-trailer improperly parked on railroad tracks on Georgia Pacific plant property in Big Island as a train approached about 7:30 p.m. Friday, police said. The semi-truck stalled on the tracks during a delivery to the Georgia Pacific mill, according to previous reports.
The driver was killed while attempting to move the truck off the tracks when it was struck by the train, according to a news release from state police.
He was then trapped under the truck after it was struck on the passenger side, the news release said source
Columbie was pronounced dead at the scene
The crash remains under investigation.
