SMITHVILLE, OH. (THECOUNT) — Ohio school resource officer, Maryssa Boskoski, has been placed on unpaid leave after being accused of waking a sleeping student, by firing her taser.
Boskoski, 32, was called to a classroom when a sleeping student wouldn’t wake up for a Liberty Prep teacher or principal. Officials say, the Smithville police officer, removed the cartridge from the Taser and “arced” it. Authorities say the sparking sound and noise from the other students woke the sleeping student up.
Liberty Prep Interim Principal Jenna Parnell told the station that the combination of the sparking noise and ensuing commotion in the classroom caused the student to wake up.
Liberty Prep’s Weapons and Dangerous Instruments rules as laid out for student: A student shall not bring to school, or threaten to bring, to any interscholastic competition or extracurricular event/activity on or off school property, or possess, handle, transmit, or conceal any object capable of injuring himself or others. This includes but is not limited to, explosives, pyrotechnic devices of any kind, and other dangerous weapons or ordinances, including objects made, constructed, or altered so that to a reasonable person the object appears to be a firearm. source
Parnell said she was stunned by the officer’s actions.
“I was a little surprised by it. Our interest is in the safety of our students so hearing that go off was a little alarming,” Parnell said. source
Official say they have a planned meeting to determine if any charges should be filed against the officer.
