PORT CHARLOTTE, FL (THECOUNT) — Catherine Akins, of Ruskin, Florida, has been identified as the victim killed in a fatal crash on U.S. 41 that diverted traffic for several hours on Monday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Akins, 63, was killed after troopers say she ran a red light at U.S. 41 and Veterans Boulevard and El Jobean Road.
Her vehicle collided with a truck driven by a 60-year-old man from Rotonda West, Florida.
The male driver of the truck suffered critical injuries and remains at Lee Memorial Hospital.
Akins was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation.
