CANAAN TOWNSHIP, OH. (THECOUNT) — Shannon Wharton, of Burbank, OH, and Erica Umstead, of Orrville, OH, have been identified as the victims in a double-fatal single-vehicle Tuesday in Canaan Township.
According to officials, first responders arrived to the scene of a crash just before midnight Tuesday on Pleasant Home Road near State Route 83 in Canaan Township. Upon arrival, officers found Wharton, 49, and Umstead, 38, ejected from their vehicle.
The initial investigation indicates that a 2003 Suzuki SUV occupied by 49-year-old Shannon Wharton of Burbank and 38-year-old Erica Umstead of Orrville struck an embankment on Pleasant Home Road and rolled multiple times after becoming airborne. source
Both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol says drugs were likely a factor in the deadly crash.
Authorities said a crash investigation is ongoing.
