CHANDLER, AZ. (THECOUNT) — The Chandler Police Department has arrested Brandon Smith, after officers say he murdered his 81-year-old grandmother early Sunday morning.

Smith, 31, was taken in custody a short time after officers arrived to a Chandler home on reports of a deceased woman around 3:30 a.m. near the area of Chandler Boulevard and the Loop 101.

When officers arrived at a Chandler apartment complex and they found 81-year-old Helen Smith dead.

Her grandson, Brandon Smith, fled the scene but was apprehended a short time later.

According to police, Brandon was caring for the elderly woman after she had urinated on herself. At some point, he struck the woman while in a tub causing her to fall and hit her head.

He then told police he decided he didn’t want his grandmother to “live like this anymore” and wanted to kill her, according to court documents. So he went into the kitchen, grabbed a knife and cut her throat, police said. source

Brandon was frustrated he was the only one in the family who was taking care of Helen, who suffered from dementia.

Brandon faces a charge of first-degree murder. Police said he was already on probation for aggravated assault.
