PAWNEE COUNTY, OK. (THECOUNT) — Agents with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation are trying to explain exactly how a young woman, arrested for public drunkenness, was found shot dead hours later in her jail cell Tuesday afternoon.
Brittany Weide DeVerges, 26, was arrested 3 a.m. Tuesday for public intoxication and possession of paraphernalia, and transported to the Pawnee County Jail.
Authorities say they checked on the young woman around 10:30 a.m. and determined that she needed to remain in the Oklahoma detox cell for an extended period of time.
At 12 p.m., officials say DeVerges was found deceased in her jail cell after suffering an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. A handgun was located on her stomach, authorities said.
Officials with the OSBI say the evidence indicates that DeVerges sneaked the weapon into the jail on her person. source
It is unclear if the area was covered by securities cameras at the time of the shooting.
The investigation is ongoing.
