“I want answers,” said Michael Thomas Jr.’s mother, Starr Ramsey, “You can look at him and tell he no teenager! Ten year’s old you get handcuffed?”
The angry mother told members of the local Chicago press that she strongly objected to police handcuffing the youth during an investigation into a gun Friday.
Chicago police say they have opened a review into a video showing 10-year-old Thomas being handcuffed as officers question the him in what his family says is a case of mistaken identity.
Cellphone video captured at the scene shows officers handcuffing Thomas while questioning him about a gun.
In the brief video, Thomas’s uncle, Victor, can be heard screaming in the background at officers saying that he objected to him nephew being detained.
“They’re telling them that someone called them saying that there is a 12-year-old black kid on a bike with all blue on had a gun,” the uncle is heard saying in the video. “There was about five little black boys with all blue on.” source
Michael’s grandmother also joined in berating officers’ cuffing of the boy. She said she was angry because the incident made her grandson cry.
“You can see that he doesn’t have any weapons on him,” Grandma said in the video. “I raised up my grandbaby’s shirt. He don’t have nothing on him. Take them handcuffs off of him.”
Witnesses said the boy was detained for a total of about 15 minutes.
Chicago police said they were looking into the matter and working to gather more facts on what happened.
“You scarred him for life,” concluded Ramsey.
