4 Utah Police Officers Hospitalized After Suicidal Man Sets Himself On Fire At Top Stop Convenience Store

Tyler Ivison has been identified as the suicidal man involved in an incident that sent four Kaysville police officers to the hospital Thursday afternoon.

Ivison, 26, was threatening suicide while inside the bathroom at the Top Stop Convenience Store in Kaysville when police arrived. He then doused himself in gasoline. As police tried to talk the man down, he suddenly lit himself on fire. The flames caused an explosion due to the confined area of the gas station restroom injuring the officers.

Three of the officers and the suicidal man were taken to University of Utah Hospital. The fourth officer was taken to nearby Davis Hospital.

The incident unfolded inside the Utah convenience store at 200 N 320 W Kaysville, UT 84037 around 2:30 p.m.

Investigators say a man walked into the gas station bathroom, doused himself with gasoline and then and set himself on fire. Four offices were injured trying to put the fire out. Friday police identified that man as Ivison.

Because the man was covered in gasoline officers couldn’t use a taser to subdue him, so they tried to talk him down. Once the man lit himself on fire is caused an eruption of flame and officers immediately tried to save him.

“At the same time there’s a lot of pride in seeing what they’ve done, and that there was no hesitation in trying to save this individual as well as the other occupants of the store,” said Chief Oberg. source

Three officers were treated and released after a several hours. One officer and the suicidal man remain in the burn unit Thursday night. That officer will stay in the hospital for 10 days, but he is expected to make a full recovery.
