Officer Bret Theil, a veteran Las Vegas police officer who was indicted Wednesday on more than two dozen kidnapping and sexual assault charges involving a child, was the subject of a standoff involving fellow Metro officers.
Theil, 38, was taken into custody after a standoff which started on Wednesday, according to North Las Vegas police.
Police said they responded to a report of a suicidal person at 7:30 p.m. in the area of Corn Creek Road and U.S. 95. Police initially said the person may be wanted in connection with a case under investigation by North Las Vegas police. source
The standoff concluded at 6 a.m. and Theil was taken into custody.
On Feb. 2, Chief District Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez issued a warrant for Theil’s arrest and set his bail at $1 million.
Theil faces six counts of first-degree kidnapping, five counts of lewdness with a child under 14, six counts of sexual assault with a minor under 14, four counts of sexual assault with a minor under 16, four counts of sexual assault, and two counts of child abuse, neglect or endangerment. The felony charges carry possible sentences of life in prison. source
Prosecutors could not immediately provide further details about the crimes, which occurred in North Las Vegas, but said in court that the victim has been threatened via email since Theil was notified of a possible indictment.
