BUCKS04, SPT, PORTER, 7. - The Giannis family watches as the Milwaukee Bucks go against New York Knicks at the BMO Harris Bradley Center Monday. February 3, 2014. GARY PORTER/GPORTER@JOURNALSENTINEL.COM
Charles Antetokounmpo, the father of Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, has passed away suddenly of a suspected heart attack at his home in Milwaukee. He was 53.
In 2014, and after getting signed to the Bucks, Giannis relocated several family members, including his parents, from Greece to America.
His parents and brothers arrived from Greece in 2014 and stayed, thanks to a lengthy but successful round of diplomacy led by JoAnne Anton, special assistant to Bucks owner Herb Kohl.
How excited was Giannis to see his family in 2014? Let him tell it.
“Everything together…I’m really excited that we’re back together and they get to see me,” he said.
“My dad was a footballer, so he worked with me on my footwork a little bit. And he coached me mentally to stay in the game and continue what I’m doing, just to play hard.
“I don’t have to worry about nothing anymore. Not what I’m going to eat. Nothing. Or what I’m going to wear. Nothing.” source
The Bucks issued this statement on Charles’ passing:
The Bucks family is heartbroken about the sudden death of Giannis’ father, Charles. The entire organization, his teammates and coaches are here to support Giannis and his family during this incredibly difficult time. Charles was a big part of the Bucks and will be terribly missed by us all. On behalf of ownership, we express our utmost condolences and offer our prayers to Giannis and his family.
Charles is survived by his wife, Veronica. And their sons, Kostas, Giannis and Alexandros.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends at this difficult time.
