PICTURED: Florida Highway Patrol KILLED During Interstate 75 Traffic Stop

Florida Highway Patrol officer, Sergeant William Bishop was killed Saturday night, June 17, according to WFLA.

The incident occurred about 6:30 PM on Interstate 75 southbound.  Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a crash, and passed it on to troopers for further investigation.

Sergeant Bishop was struck while he was outside of his patrol car, trying to close several lanes of the interstate.  A Cadillac didn’t slow down, and hit a Ford Fusion, which then struck Sergeant Bishop.  He was pinned under the car after he was struck, according to The Orlando Sentinel.

Florida Highway Patrol Lieutenant Patrick Riordan said that Sergeant Bishop was a 30-year veteran. The lieutenant also said, “He was well-liked and a senior member of the Florida Highway Patrol.”

In a statement from the FHP and the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, it said that “everyone was grieving with Bishop’s wife, son and the rest of his family during this horrific time,” and that “he was a model trooper who put the well-being of those he serves above his own to keep Florida roadways safe.”

No one has been arrested. The Florida Highway Patrol is conducting the investigation.

Master Sergeant William Bishop was an Army veteran. He leaves behind his wife and son.
