An Albuquerque teen is in hot water after being arrested for allegedly placing a homemade bomb in the form of a pressure cooker – under his ex-girlfriend’s bed – while she was getting her diploma at her graduation ceremony.
Local news outlets said that Ethan Guillen, 18, allegedly placed the pressure cooker bomb under his girlfriend’s bed two weeks ago but it was discovered Wednesday afternoon. Luckily the device malfunctioned.
Court documents obtained by KOAT indicated that the Guillen mixed nuts, a fuse, energized material, bolts, and a plastic bag containing clear rubber material in the pressure cooker. He then allegedly broke into his ex’s home through a balcony while she and her family went to her high school graduation. He had intended the cooker to detonate at 1:30 pm. The girl (identified as “M.C.” in the complaint) reportedly told federal agents that Guillen had harassed her in high school to the point that she had to be escorted from class to class. source
An agent with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms said the 18-year-old originally denied involvement. Investigators recovered latex gloves, a table with burns on it, and duct tape that matched tape on the cooker after the man’s father gave authorities permission to search the home.
“When Guillen was told that the room next to M.C.’s had small children and a baby in it, Guillen stated that he knew and did not care,” the complaint states. “Guillen stated he just wanted M.C. dead.”
Guillen appeared in federal court on Thursday, charged with possessing a destructive device not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record. He faces up to ten years in prison if convicted.
