Josh Greenberg, cofounder of music streaming service Grooveshark, was found dead in his Florida home on Sunday. He was only 28 years old.
Gainesville, Florida cops say that there was no evidence of foul play or suicide.
Greenberg founded Grooveshark in 2006 with Sam Tarantino when the pair were just 19 and students at the University of Florida. The service emerged as the music industry transitioned from rampant illegal downloading to legal streaming. But Grooveshark’s team struggled to win approval from the major labels. “It was always the chicken and the egg: You go into the labels and they say, ‘That’s an interesting idea, go get users.’ And we get users and they’re like, ‘Oh, you’re a pirate,'” Tarantino, the CEO recalled to Mashable in 2013. “At the time they didn’t have a way to say, ‘Here’s an experimental license, go do it and we’ll negotiate later.'” h/t mashable
Grooveshark shut down in late April, effectively sued into oblivion by the labels.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Greenberg’s family and friends at this difficult time.
