WEST TEXAS: Granted, the winner does get crowned “Miss Snake Charmer” however, to get the gold contestants must decapitate a live western diamondback rattlesnake and then skin it.
The pageant starts with hunters from as far away as Japan. Soon after the hunters arrive they begin to round up the snakes that live on the countryside. The snakes are then brought to the venue.
Attendees can take a whack at skinning their own snake for $10. After the skinning guests rub their hands in snake blood and leave handprints on the wall.
“Tomorrow I get to skin snakes and chop their heads off, and I am super-excited about it,” said Laney Wallace, Miss Snake Charmer 2011, Wallace then did what she had to do wearing a tiara and using a machete.
