Feds made history today, by taking down 127 suspected mobsters and company from the Northeast, charging them with murders, extortion and other crimes spanning decades. 125 were arrested this morning, 2 of the suspects were already in jail.
Feds used a shotgun approach to take all the players down, with some 800 federal agents and police officers making simultaneous arrests all the way from New York to New Jersey to Rhode Island.
The indictments listed wonderful nicknames like- Bobby Glasses, Vinny Carwash, Jack the Whack, Johnny Cash, Junior Lollipops- who all have a history of murders, arson, extortion and other crimes dating back 30 years.
There were so many arrest that FBI had to move ‘processing’, which is normally done at its lower Manhattan headquarters, but had to be set up in a ‘gym at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn’. Three judges in three separate courtrooms were needed to enter pleas and decide bail for dozens of defendants.
Attorney General Eric Holder said the bust was “an important and encouraging step forward in disrupting La Cosa Nostra’s operations. Members and associates of La Cosa Nostra are among the most dangerous criminals in our country. The very oath of allegiance sworn by these Mafia members during their initiation ceremony binds them to a life of crime.”
