MIAMI, FLORIDA – Tuesday November 23, 2010. THE LITTLE-POTAMUS – RARE PYGMY HIPPO BORN WEIGHING JUST TWELVE POUNDS: This tiny new born animal is big news for the survival of its species – a rare pygmy hippo. The miniature hippopotamus was born to mother Pogo and father Kelsey at Miami Zoo in Florida. Pygmy hippos are substantially smaller than the common river hippos – which weigh around 100 times more. The smaller relations are extremely rare in the wild with only a few thousand found in isolated pockets of West Africa. A spokesman for the zoo said they have not yet named the new arrival. He said: ”The baby will remain out of the public view with its mother for several days to allow bonding and ensure the infant develops a strong foundation.” Photograph: Ron Magill, Supplied by PacificCoastNews.com
