The Food and Drug Administration has officially informed the makers of caffeinated alcoholic beverages they have 15 days to reformulate their beverages or face seizure under federal law calling the products a “public health concern.”
The FDA had been investigating the drinks, dubbed, “Blackout in a can” concluding caffeine contained in the beverages can lessen the drinkers knowledge of just how drunk they really are.
The popular beverages are sold at convenience stores who say the product flies off the shelves. Drinking one can of the concoction is equal to consuming three cups of coffee and three cans of beer.
“Four Loko” gained dubious international attention by sending countless college kids to the ER and worse, dozens to an early grave.
Other companies involved are Joose and Max brands, Charge Beverages Corp. and New Century Brewing of Boston.
