HOUSTON, TX. (THECOUNT) — Justin Carter, an up-and-coming country music singer, touted as the next “Garth Brooks,” was killed after accidentally shooting himself while filming a music video in Houston, Texas, according to NBC4i.

According to Carter’s mother, he was carrying the gun in his pocket when it went off and “caught my son in the corner of his eye.”

“He was a wonderful artist,” Carter’s mother, Cindy McClellan, told Fox News. “He was the voice, he was the total package and we’re trying to keep his legend [alive].”

He was father to two young children.

“He loved our God very much,” McClellan said. “He had a Bible in his room, in the den, he had one in his truck. He gave to charities.”

Carter had just signed a deal with Triple Threat Management, which confirmed his death Thursday.

“Justin had a potential to, you know, in our eyes, and a lot of people’s eyes to be the next Garth Brooks,” Mark Atherton, who signed Carter, told NBC4i.

His family is asking for donations to pay for funeral costs.
