NEW YORK CITY, NY. (THECOUNT) — Malaysia Goodson, of Stamford, Connecticut, has been identified as the young mother who died after suffering a fall down a flight of New York City subway station stairs on Monday.

After a busy day of shopping, Goodson, 22, was carrying shopping bags, a stroller and her 1-year-old baby when she lost her footing and fell down a flight of stairs leading to a New York City subway station on Monday, according to officials.

The victim was found unconscious at about 8 p.m. Monday in a stairwell of the subway station on Seventh Avenue and 53rd Street, police said. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, reports WashingtonPost.

Miraculously, little Rhylee was unharmed during the incident.

Lt. Paul Ng, a spokesman for the New York Police Department, said that Goodson was carrying her baby in her arms when she fell. Some media reports indicated the victim was carrying the child in a stroller.

A family member told reporters that Goodson had been in Manhattan for a shopping trip and was attempting to manage the child and “a lot of bags,” in addition to the stroller, when the fatal fall occurred.

It was not immediately clear confirmed why Goodson fell.

The medical examiner’s office, which is investigating the death, did not immediately respond to a request for information, reports the WP.

The agency that runs New York’s subway system, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, said in a statement it had found the stairs, railing and floor at the station where Goodson was found in good condition.

“This is an absolutely heartbreaking incident,” the agency said in a statement. “This is a heartbreaking tragedy that never should have happened,” Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) wrote on Twitter. “The subway system is not accessible for everyone and that’s an environment the MTA should not allow.”

A GoFundMe has been erected to help pay for the child’s education:

“Malaysia Goodson passed away tragically on Monday night leaving behind her 1 year old daughter, Rhylee. We would like to do what we can to help support Rhylee during this very difficult time. The money will be used to set up an Education Fund for Rhylee.”
