NAGQU, TIBET (THECOUNT) — A powerful magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Tibet-Qinghai border region of western China on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, according to preliminary seismic data from multiple monitoring agencies.

The earthquake occurred at 14:33:39 UTC, or 10:33:39 p.m. local time in China, at an estimated depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), according to the reported seismic readings.

The epicenter was located near latitude 32.441 north and longitude 93.855 east, approximately 201 kilometers (125 miles) northeast of Nagqu, in the Tibet Autonomous Region.

The relatively shallow depth of the earthquake raises concern about potential ground shaking in nearby communities. However, initial information provided with the seismic alert did not include confirmed reports of injuries, fatalities, structural damage or disruptions to infrastructure.

The reported magnitude is classified as a moment magnitude (Mw) 7.0 earthquake, a major seismic event capable of producing severe shaking and significant damage near the epicenter, depending on local geological conditions, building construction and population exposure.

The earthquake was detected by multiple seismic monitoring networks, including agencies identified in the preliminary data as BUD, GSRAS, IGN, MLT, SC4, KOERI and GFZ. Magnitude and location estimates can be revised as additional seismic data are analyzed.

The affected region lies in the high-altitude area near the boundary between the Tibet Autonomous Region and Qinghai province. The broader region is part of a tectonically active area associated with the ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian continental plates.

Authorities had not provided a verified assessment of the earthquake’s impact in the information available at publication time. Reports of casualties, damage and possible aftershocks remain unconfirmed.

Given the earthquake’s reported magnitude and shallow depth, damage is possible in communities near the epicenter, although the extent of any destruction and potential casualties has not been independently confirmed.
