REDWOOD CITY, CA (THECOUNT) — Legendary video game developer BioWare, the iconic studio behind franchises including Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Baldur’s Gate, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, is officially closing its doors after more than 30 years.
Parent company Electronic Arts (EA) confirmed the shutdown on Wednesday as part of a sweeping corporate restructuring that includes roughly 400 layoffs across divisions. As a direct result, early development on the next highly anticipated Mass Effect title has been canceled.

In an official statement released by the studio, BioWare reflected on its three-decade legacy:
“For more than 30 years, BioWare has been more than a studio. It has been a home for storytellers, developers, and the players who brought our worlds to life… Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending.”
The announcement brings a sudden end to one of the most celebrated role-playing game developers in gaming history.
