Police said the shooting occurred shortly before 1 p.m. Sunday near Venice Boulevard and Catalina Street. The man believed to have shot the boys then turned the gun on himself, according to investigators. He survived and was hospitalized. His condition was not immediately available in the reports.

Both children were pronounced dead at a hospital, authorities said. Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner records list the deaths as homicides. Jimmy died from a close-range gunshot wound to the head, while Osmani died from a gunshot wound to the head.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, and authorities have not established a motive.

NBC4 reported that the boys were with their father during a custody visit and that he took them to McDonald’s before the shooting. The reported outing preceded the fatal gunfire near the intersection, but investigators have not publicly explained what led to the violence.

Friends and community members left candles, flowers and balloons at a makeshift memorial on the sidewalk near the scene. The tributes marked the location where the two children were killed and reflected the grief surrounding their deaths.
