SHERMAN, TX. (THECOUNT) — An unidentified 23-year-old man was killed early Thursday when a vehicle driven by Samaj Johnson, 23, of Sherman, crashed and rolled over along the US Highway 75 east service road in Sherman, Grayson County, Texas.

The crash occurred around 1 a.m. in the 5700 block of the North US Highway 75 east service road, according to the Sherman Police Department, which received multiple calls reporting a vehicle had rolled over.

Responding officers found the passenger deceased approximately 15 feet west of the service road, police said.

Johnson was initially found lying in the roadway. Police said he stood up and attempted to flee after seeing officers, but was taken into custody.

Johnson was booked into the Grayson County Jail and charged with intoxication manslaughter.

The Sherman Police Department’s Critical Accident Investigation Team determined Johnson was allegedly driving while intoxicated. He was also injured in the crash and transported to a hospital for treatment, where he remained in police custody pending medical release.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.

Sherman is the county seat of Grayson County in North Texas, approximately 65 miles north of Dallas and about 30 miles south of the Texas-Oklahoma border.
