CHARLOTTE, NC. (THECOUNT) — Edgardo Antonio Hernandez Jr., 23, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Nicholas Keenan James at a west Charlotte hotel early Thursday morning, according to an arrest warrant and affidavit.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers responded shortly before 1:45 a.m. Thursday to the Econo Lodge Charlotte Airport Area on Glenwood Drive after receiving a report of an assault with a deadly weapon. Officers found James suffering from gunshot wounds in the hotel parking lot, and he was transported to Atrium Health Main, where he later died.

According to the affidavit, the shooting occurred during a fight involving allegedly stolen money. The document does not specify the amount of money involved or provide additional details about what led to the confrontation.

Detectives recovered a Glock 45 9mm pistol during the investigation, according to the arrest warrant. Hernandez was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in Mecklenburg County.
