DINWIDDIE COUNTY, VA. (THECOUNT) — Dinwiddie County Commonwealth’s Attorney, Thomas Orlando “T.O.” Rainey III, has been identified as the bicyclist fatally struck Thursday morning by a hit-and-run vehicle in Dinwiddie County, Virginia.

Rainey, 70, was killed by a hit-and-run vehicle while riding a bicycle in Dinwiddie Thursday morning.

According to reports, Rainey was operating a bicycle on the 18220 block of Flatfoot Road in Dinwiddie, when he was struck by a Nissan Frontier pickup truck that then fled the scene around 6:15 a.m. Thursday.

Rainey was pronounced dead of blunt force trauma injuries suffered in the collision.

Investigators say they recovered a piece of a side view mirror from the crash site. Side mirrors usually carry markings that can identify specific vehicles.

Rainey was Dinwiddie’s elected chief prosecutor from 1986 to 2004. He also was a founding member Hill & Rainey law firm in Colonial Heights, which was established in 1982. Rainey was an active partner of the firm.
