GIRARD, OH. (THECOUNT) — An Ohio mother is dealing with accidentally shooting her own daughter who had entered her home in an effort to surprise her coming back from college.

The student returned home from college without first notifying her mother, who then shot her in the arm.

Officers were called to Ohio Avenue in Girard at about 9 p.m. Friday on reports of shots fired.

When police arrived they learned from the homeowner that in her bedroom when she became frightened by a commotion inside the house. That prompted her to grab a nearby sidearm. Then, a person came running into the room so she fired one round from her revolver.

She then realized she had just shot her 18-year-old daughter.

TheCount.com has learned, while the teen came back to visit mom, she did not come alone.

A male friend of the daughter told police “they” had just arrived from college to surprise her mother. The man said he heard a single gunshot and screaming, then went inside to help.

The female victim suffered a gunshot wound to her elbow and was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for treatment, according to FOX8.

Her condition was not updated.
