SPRINGFIELD, MO. (THECOUNT) — Wally McCurdy has been identified as the victim who died while in police custody at a Springfield, Missouri Walmart on Monday.

McCurdy, 32, died while in custody after officers made an arrest outside a north Springfield Walmart Monday afternoon.

The involved officer was working in an off-duty capacity for Walmart, located 1923 E Kearney St, in Springfield, MO, when he confronted a pair of shoplifting suspects who then fled the store.

The officer arrested a woman at a nearby restaurant. While pursuing the man on-foot, the officer deployed his taser, striking McCurdy.

Officers then observed the man struggled to breathe. Officers conducted unsuccessful life-saving measures.

McCurdy was later pronounced dead after being transported to an area hospital.

The Greene County Medical Examiner will determine a cause of death, reports KY3.

Police say the two officers are on administrative leave as a both internal and criminal investigation happens as is routine.
