MERRIAM, KAN. (THECOUNT) — Angela Carter, 52, of Olathe, has been identified as the woman killed Monday morning when the 2024 Chevrolet Suburban she was driving crashed while exiting Interstate 35 in Merriam, Johnson County, Kansas.

The fatal single-vehicle crash was reported around 10 a.m. Monday on the northbound I-35 exit ramp to 75th Street, near the Johnson County communities of Merriam and Overland Park in the Kansas City metropolitan area.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Carter was driving the Suburban northbound on the exit ramp when the SUV left the roadway to the left and struck a guardrail approximately 200 feet south of 75th Street.

The vehicle continued across the 75th Street intersection, where it struck several raised medians before leaving the roadway and coming to rest in a ditch on the northeast side of the intersection.

Carter was the driver and only occupant of the SUV. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The Highway Patrol said she was wearing her seat belt.

Recorded emergency-radio traffic reviewed by the Johnson County Post indicated responders considered Carter’s condition possibly related to a medical emergency rather than trauma caused by the crash. The Highway Patrol’s crash log does not cite a medical emergency as the cause of the collision, and the circumstances remain under investigation.

Emergency crews from Overland Park and Merriam responded to the scene, including firefighters and Johnson County Med-Act paramedics. The crash investigation temporarily closed the ramp connecting 75th Street with northbound I-35.

The ramp reopened before 1 p.m. Monday after investigators completed their work at the scene.

Merriam is a Johnson County suburb in the Kansas City metropolitan area, located immediately southwest of the Kansas City, Missouri, state line. The crash occurred near the boundary between Merriam and Overland Park at the I-35 and 75th Street interchange.
