APPOMATTOX COUNTY, VA. (THECOUNT) — Deputy Burlie W. Duvall III was killed Thursday while assisting at the scene of a crash in Appomattox County, Virginia, according to the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office announced Duvall’s death Friday, describing the veteran deputy as having dedicated his life to protecting the community before making the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Authorities said Duvall was assisting at the scene of a traffic crash when the fatal incident occurred. Officials have not released additional details about the circumstances, saying the incident remains under investigation.
“Deputy Burlie W. Duvall III dedicated his life to protecting this community, and he gave that life while serving others,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “His courage, selflessness, and commitment to duty will never be forgotten.”
The sheriff’s office asked the public to keep Duvall’s family, fellow deputies, emergency responders, and everyone affected by the tragedy in their thoughts as the investigation continues.
Officials also expressed gratitude to the numerous law enforcement agencies, fire departments, EMS personnel, emergency dispatchers, and members of the community who have offered support in the wake of the deputy’s death.
“Deputy Duvall’s sacrifice will never be forgotten,” the sheriff’s office said. “His service, dedication, and commitment to the citizens of Appomattox County will forever remain a part of the legacy of this sheriff’s office.”
Authorities said additional information, including funeral arrangements and opportunities for the public to pay their respects, will be announced at a later date.
The incident remains under investigation, and no further information has been released.
Appomattox County is located in central Virginia, approximately 25 miles east of Lynchburg.
