LAS VEGAS, NV. (THECOUNT) — Officer Austin Abdelnabi, 30, a former U.S. Marine and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer, died Tuesday after being shot during a shootout with an armed suspect while responding to a 911 call in east Las Vegas, according to Sheriff Kevin McMahill.
LVMPD officers were dispatched to the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue near Mountain Vista and Interstate 11 following reports of an intoxicated man waving a firearm. The suspect opened fire immediately as officers arrived, ambushing them, authorities said. Both Abdelnabi and the suspect were struck during the exchange of gunfire.

Abdelnabi was transported to a hospital where he died from his injuries despite lifesaving efforts, according to police. The suspect also died at the scene.

Abdelnabi had served with LVMPD since November 2023. He was a U.S. Marine veteran before joining the department. Sheriff McMahill described the attack as an ambush during a Thursday press conference announcing the officer’s identity.
The shooting marked the ninth officer-involved shooting in Las Vegas in 2026, according to department records.
Clark County officials reminded the public that trauma counseling resources are available through the Resiliency & Justice Center for community members affected by the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives review evidence from the scene.
Las Vegas is located in southern Nevada, approximately 275 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
