WEST JEFFERSON, NC. (THECOUNT)Eric Steven Rominger, 47, of Crumpler, North Carolina, was killed Monday night after a single-vehicle pickup truck crash on Idlewild Road near Worth McNeil Road in Fleetwood, Ashe County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

West Jefferson is located in northwestern North Carolina near the Virginia border and is part of the Appalachian Mountain region. The crash occurred on a rural stretch of Idlewild Road in Ashe County.

Troopers responded to the scene at approximately 10:30 p.m. Monday, July 27, after receiving reports of a serious collision involving a 2001 Dodge Dakota pickup truck.

According to investigators, Rominger was traveling northbound on Idlewild Road when the vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway. Authorities said he overcorrected, causing the pickup truck to cross the roadway before leaving the left side of the road, striking an embankment and overturning.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said Rominger was ejected from the vehicle during the rollover crash.

Rominger suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead as a result of the collision.

Investigators determined that speed was a contributing factor in the crash. Troopers said impairment is not believed to have contributed to the collision.

The roadway remained closed for approximately one hour while authorities conducted their on-scene investigation.

The Highway Patrol stated that no charges will be filed in connection with the crash.

The investigation into the fatal collision has been completed by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
